Technology-stirred Projective Processes in Couple Teletherapy

Presenter: Carl Bagnini, LCSW, BCD

Friday, June 11th at 6-8PM

Two CEs Available for NYS Social Workers

The increase in telehealth and teletherapy during the COVID pandemic raises many ethical, clinical, and situational concerns. Some have been in play long before the increased uses of virtual approaches to psychotherapy, most recently due to the perils of office practice. This Workshop explores implications of technology on clinical work, including the projective process encountered with couples: the world of easy access to a therapist’s personal and professional identity, the influence of the non-office physical environment on couple interactions and the triangular field of psychodynamics, and the meaning of multiple screen settings. Evocative vignettes convey the pitfalls and pratfalls of virtual work with couples.

After attending the presentation, participants will be able to

1. Discuss some caveats of doing teletherapy.

2. Identify therapeutic opportunities arising from teletherapy.

3. Describe how the couple setting, technology, and pets influence interventive choices.
